How to Help Someone Struggling With Addiction

Watching a loved one struggle with addiction is concerning, to say the least. It’s common to want to help, but be afraid that confronting them will only push them away. We offer some advice.

To begin with, it helps to keep in mind that addiction isn’t a choice. It’s often influenced by a number of factors outside of the addict’s control, such as genetics and co-occurring mental illnesses. Other things to consider include environmental factors like home and family, age, peer pressure and stress.

Denial is an inherent part of the disease of addiction, and approaching an addict about their behaviour and need to get into treatment is a complex task.  Know that it will take time, educate yourself, get the support you need and have a plan.

This challenging endeavour is best done with professional support before, during and after an intervention. Learn more here: How to Approach and Help a Drug Addict or Alcoholic.
