Everything You Need to Know About New Synthetic Drugs

New synthetic drugs are becoming increasingly popular and are causing waves of overdoses worldwide as they are often sold as more typical hard drugs like cocaine and ecstasy.

Their ability to be made in labs located anywhere in the world, and myriad formulations that continue to evade law enforcement, mean these new designer substances are widely available.  But the fact that most of these ‘legal highs’ have not yet been classified under specific drug schedules does not mean they are safe.  In fact, they can be extremely volatile, resulting in aggressive behaviour, paranoid delusions or physical effects necessitating hospitalization.  And the chance that your Molly is actually a bath salt analog, or your cocaine is cut with a Chinese lab-made chemical, is not as slim as you may think.

New categories of synthetic drugs include:

  • Synthetic euphoric stimulants and empathogens (‘bath salts’)
  • Substitute opioids
  • New designer psychedelics
  • New manufactured dissociatives
  • New designer sedatives
