Newly Discovered Antibody Prevents Cocaine ‘High’

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have discovered an antibody that may prevent cocaine users from getting high off of the drug.

The human antibody works by attaching to cocaine molecules in the bloodstream and preventing them from entering the brain. Users don’t experience the same levels of dopamine release, thereby diminishing cocaine’s addictive properties.  The antibody is administered by injection.

Says its developer Dr Andrew Norman, “The antibody does not cure addiction and it is not a panacea‚ but rather a means to assist individuals who still face the very difficult task of beating addiction.”
