Is it Possible to Have an ‘Addictive Personality’?

No one is fated to become an addict.  However, there are certain personality traits that tend to indicate that you may be more at risk for addiction than others.

Some characteristics are commonly found among people who struggle with addiction.  They include:

  • Impulsive behaviour
  • Compulsive behaviour
  • Nonconformity
  • Inability to deal with stress
  • Low self-esteem
  • Grandiosity
  • Lack of patience
  • Denial
  • Antisocial behaviour

Mental health disorders also often accompany addiction, as there is a strong link between the two conditions, which often feed into each other.  In fact, over 50 per cent of addicts have some kind of underlying mental health concern.  In this case, it’s essential to get specialised treatment that can adequately and simultaneously treat both.

No one is destined for a life of addiction, but it’s helpful to know if you are at increased risk.  Watch for the signs, and if you think you are developing an addiction, contact a professional addiction treatment centre immediately to find out what your options are.
